Book of the month - May

May 8
2 min read

May is Share a Story month, so we have decided that this would be the ideal time to start naming a book of the month. Our first choice has been chosen as part of National Doughnut Week, which starts on May 16th and runs until May 24th. You can find out more about National Doughnut Week here.

Book of the month

Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell is funny, engaging, and carries an important message that children can easily understand. A great book by Sue Hendra, about Norman, a slug who is desperate to fit in with a group of snails, and makes attempts by wearing unusual shells. Through humour and colourful illustrations, children can learn about confidence and being proud of who they are.

The use of simple and repetitive language makes this book especially effective for younger readers, making it great for children developing their reading skills. The rhyming patterns and silly situations also encourage participation and laughter during storytime sessions.

This book opens opportunities for meaningful discussions around individuality, friendships, and feelings. Children can relate to wanting to fit in or worrying about what others think, which makes Norman a very likeable and memorable character.

Combining humour, emotional learning, and strong engagement, makes this a great choice for book of the month. Join us with this month's read, and let us know what your think of our choice using #BWBUKBookofthemonth on Instagram.

Share a story

We have given you a great story suggestion for sharing with your Bookworm Babies this month, but there are other ways that you can share a story.

  • Storytelling - You can become a storyteller and retell your favourite stories with your Bookworm Babies. Perfect for introducing them to a special piece of your childhood.

  • Act out a story - You can get dramatic and put on silly costumes or fancy clothes and act out your favourite stories.

  • Create a story - Making up a story with your Bookworm Babies is a great way to bond and share something unique and create a memorable moment.

Let us know how you will be sharing your stories this month using #BWBUKShareastory and tag us in your pictures, we would love to see them!

Thank you for the book suggestion. We will read it as we like our bookworm babies to try and read along with us.
